Traffic signal on Broadway at 125th Street casts a strong shadow in the brilliant sunlight of a December afternoon.Towering over the signal is the Manhattan Valley viaduct, which carries thethree tracks of the [IRT] 1 Train, into 125th Street station above Broadway. The impressive 2,174-foot-long (663 m) elevated structure carries the Broadway–Seventh Avenue Linehigh above the natural valley that surrounds 125th Street in the western reaches of Harlem where it blends into the Manhattanville and Morningside Heights neighborhoods.©2021 Steve Ember

Steve Ember is a Washington-based photographer, writer, and voice actor/narrator. In addition to his signature New York (including many “SubwayScapes” integrating elevated rail lines into views of the urban fabric), Baltimore, and Washington cityscapes, his work also encompasses Alpine landscapes, European, and American motifs, including night scenes, as well as railroad and aviation subjects, and aerial photography.
