Amtrak diesel-electric locomotive No. 43, a GE Genesis P42DC is well-scrubbed after being run through the warm, soapy, scrubby-rollers, well-nourished with diesel fuel, turned in the right direction, and ready for its next assignment as it rumbles, shining in the sunlight of late afternoon, past K Tower at Washington's Union Station.
K Tower controls the train activity in the wide throat of Union Station, The dense pattern of high-voltage catenary identifies this complex as the origination point for Amtrak's electrified high-speed Northeast Corridor trains to New York, Boston, and intermediate points. Beyond the catenary, in telephoto-compressed perspective, can be seen some of the new construction in Washington's revitalized NoMa (North of Massachussetts Avenue) area.
On one of the station's through tracks, the diesel will take over a southbound train from its ACS-64 Sprinter-class high-speed electric locomotive, for the continuation of its journey, as electric service...
